John Russell Walker was my uncle and known as Jack in our family. He was one of 11 children, two of his brothers also went to WWI and both were wounded but made it home. Jack was very musical and cou...ld play most instruments including the bagpipes. Before the war he worked in the forestry on the West Coast. He enlisted from the West Coast although his parents and family were in Collingwood. He was a much loved older brother to my mother and they were very close. We have several postcards that he sent to her. Jack was always remembered at gatherings. He died at Chunuk Bair on August 15th, 1915. Read More

John Russell Walker was known as Jack. He was my Uncle - my mothers brother. He was one of 11 children and born at Ferntown in Golden Bay. When he enlisted he was living on the West Coast and working... at the forestry at Westport. He was killed at Chunuk Bair on 18th August 1915. Uncle Jack was very musical and could play many instruments especially the bagpipes. He was a good horseman. Two of Jack's brothers, Bob (Robert) and Sandy (Alex) also went to war.
