Albany Public Cemetery (Old)

Location Information:

The cemetery is composed of two parts, the Lower Cemetery and the Upper Cemetery, divided by Middleton Road at the north-east entrance to the present day urban core of the City of Albany.

Historical Information:

Now renamed Memorial Park Cemetery, this was the first consecrated cemetery in Western Australia. A closed cemetery, it was formerly a group of denominational cemeteries dating from the initial gazetting as a public burial ground in 1840 to its closure as a public cemetery in 1959. As well as those burials of servicemen and mariners, many of whom were in transit between other countries, the many other burials reflect the social history of Albany.
