Biographical Notes:

William enlisted on the 25th May 1916. He trained in NZ until his departure on the troopship "Devon" on the 26th September 1916, bound for England with the 17th Reinforcements. His brother, Thomas Wilfred Gledhill was also aboard (Nominal Roll). 

He was hospitalised on 7th July 1916 for 4 days and given a further 4 days sick leave, suffering from Influenza.

He became sick after departing Melbourne, and on the 5th October 1916, was hospitalised in Albany, Western Australia, suffering from Purulent Opthalemia. His service record states that there were no signs of Gonhorrea.

He died from sickness on the 2nd November 1916.

Thomas Gledhill was Killed in Action on the 9th August 1917 at Warneton, Belgium. His name appears on the Messines Ridge (New Zealand) Memorial. [Source: Archives New Zealand]
