"Mrs Gough-Gubbins, of Ouse street, received official information this morning that her son, Private George Gough-Gubbins, had been killed in action on the 27th August. The deceased soldier, who was in his 28th year, volunteered for active service, and left with the Thirty-Second Reinforcements. He was educated at the North School and the Waitaki High School. He adopted the printing trade and served his apprenticeship at the North Otago Times Office, subsequently joining the mechanical staff of the Oamaru Mail, on which he was engaged as a linotype operator at the time of his enlistment. He was keenly interested in athletics, and was a prominent player in the Athletic Football Club. Private Gough-Gubbins left as a member of the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, but lately was sent for special training for the Lewis gun section."
