Biographical Notes:

"Corporal Alick Gibb attended this School from 1925 till July, 1929. In 1926 he obtained his Senior Free Place and in 1928 he passed the Public Service and the University Entrance Examinations. He gained first places in Form V. in History, French, Science and Arithmetic, and, generally, was an excellent pupil. On leaving school he entered the Public Trust, first in the Wellington office and later in Hastings, Hamilton and Dunedin. In 1937 he was loaned to the N.Z. Reparation Estates, Apia, Samoa. In 1940 he returned to New Zealand for the express purpose of enlisting in the 2nd N.Z.E.F. for service overseas, and in April, 1941, he left with the 5th Reinforcements. As a machine-gunner he fought with his company in the Libyan campaign from El Alamein to Tunisia, and in October, 1943, he arrived in Italy. Prior to this, while in Tripoli, he was married to Sister S. J. Greenall, of the N.Z. Army Nursing Corps, whom he met in Cairo. On the 28th November, 1943, he, with his company, crossed the Sangro River, and on the 1st December, while carrying out a most important job under heavy shell fire, he was badly wounded and died three hours later. He was buried in the military cemetery near the Sangro River."  [The Haurakian, Thames High School, 1946, p54]
