"The death occurred in the Cook Hospital, Gisborne, last week of Mr Charles Atta, eldest son of the late Mrs Pat White, Tokomaru Bay. Mr Atta was 32 years of age and single. He enlisted early in the Second World War and went overseas with the Maori Battalion. He was taken prisoner and spent nearly three years in a German prison camp. Here his health was undermined and since returning to New Zealand, he suffered considerably, being an inmate of the hospital on several occasions.

On Monday at the Tokomaru Bay cemetery, at the Soldiers’ Plot, he was accorded a military funeral. The Rev. Mr Puha officiated.
