Biographical Notes:

"TROOPER H H. FORDHAM Trooper Herbert Henry Fordham, of the 6th Reinforcements for the Auckland Mounted Regiment, died in hospital in Wellington on Friday. During the past eighteen years Trooper Fordham had been farming in the backblocks, and latterly had been at Woodleigh, Waikato. Prior to his departure to Trentham he was entertained by the settlers and presented with an English lever watch as a mark of the respect in which he was held. Trooper Fordham served in the war in South Africa for three months, with the 1st Imperial Light Horse, and after six months' mining on the Rand, returned to New Zealand. It was he who discovered the murderer Norman Keals at Onewhero. Trooper Fordham was about 41 years old.” [Press, Volume LI, Issue 15324, 7 July 1915, Page 2]

“Another old Leigh boy succumbed to measles and pneumonia at Trentham Camp, in the person of Herbert Henry Fordham, son of the late Mr Sydney Fordham, a well known and respected settler of Leigh. Herbert was through the Boer war, but lately was farming at Glen Murray. He sold his farm to join the Expeditionary Force. The body would have been brought to Leigh to be laid alongside his parents, but on account of the north-easterly gale the steamer was unable to come, so he was buried at Otahuhu, where his sister resides.” [Rodney and Otamatea Times, Waitemata and Kaipara Gazette, 14 July 1915, Page 3]
