Biographical Notes:

“News was received in Wellington yesterday that Captain Roy James FitzGerald, of the British Air Service, formerly of the Gloucester Regiment, has been killed in aerial warfare. Captain FitzGerald, who was born in Wellington 27 years ago, was a son of the late Mr. W. G. FitzGerald, chemist, and was educated at The Terrace School and Wellington College. He learned the trade of an engineer with Messrs. S. Luke and Co., and then went to sea, in due course obtaining his certificate. When the war broke out he was on the engine-room staff of a steamer in African waters, and at once went to England, where he entered the Imperial Army. While serving with his regiment on the Western front he was taken prisoner, but escaped after five months' detention, under circumstances which have already been fully related. Returning to England, he was urged lo undertake home service, but, preferring a more exciting life, he was sent to Italy, where he did more brilliant work, and gained a bar to the Military Cross which he had received for bravery on the Western front. He then joined the British Flying Corps. The deceased, who was a man of fine physique and a very popular officer, was married about eighteen months ago to an English lady. His brother Maurice is a captain in the Gloucester Regiment, another brother (Gerald) is a corporal with the New Zealand Forces in France, and his stepbrother Jan is with the Tank Corps in France. Mrs. Alexander Stewart, of E[l]tham, and Sister Eileen FitzGerald, now on the staff of a military hospital in France, are his sisters. Captain FitzGerald was a nephew of Mrs. Robert Pearson, of The Terrace, Wellington.” [Dominion, Volume 11, Issue 263, 26 July 1918, Page 4]
