Biographical Notes:

“Private John Campbell Lindsay Ewing was born at Lyttelton on September 13, 1895. He was the only child of Mr James Ewing, a well-known marine engineer, now resident at Kilbirnie, Wellington, and was educated at the Lyttelton and Berhampore Schools, and Wellington College. He was qualifying as an engineer when he attested with the 30th Reinforcements (Wellington Infantry). He had been in various engagements during the past six months until he was killed in action on August 24. An expert craftsman and an ardent lover of his native land, his death is deeply regretted by a wide circle of friends, and much sympathy is felt for his parents in their sad loss.“ [Otago Witness, Issue 3367, 25 September 1918, Page 42]
