Biographical Notes:

“The death occurred suddenly on Thursday morning of Mr Harold Edgar, a well known barrister and solicitor in Christchurch, and deputy-chairman of the No. 10 Armed Forces Appeal Board. Mr Edgar was the elder son of Mr and Mrs W. T. Edgar and came to Christchurch from Auckland with his parents in 1894. He was educated at the Fendalton, Normal, and Christchurch Boys’ High Schools, and entered Canterbury University College as a law student. He graduated as LL.B. in 1912. He was articled to Mr David Bates, barrister and solicitor, and entered into partnership with him later, under the firm name of Bates and Edgar. After the death of Mr Bates, the business was carried on by Mr Edgar under the same name. Mr Edgar enlisted in the last war, and, after gaining a commission, left New Zealand with the 28th Reinforcements, serving with the trench mortar section of the Rifle Brigade. He was a member of the Army of Occupation, and when demobilised, he was posted to the reserve of officers as a lieutenant. During the present war he joined the National Reserve. On the entry of Japan he was mobilised, and served with the 3rd and 5th Battalions, holding the rank of captain at the time of his discharge in 1943. A keen debater, Mr Edgar was a member of the Forensic Club in his student days. He was also interested in outdoor sports, and played golf. While a resident of the Mount Pleasant district he took an active interest in local matters, and had been chairman of the School Committee, president of the Burgesses’ Association, and was a vice-president of the Mount Pleasant Boating Club and the Mount Pleasant Bowling Club. He was also a member of the local Domain Board. He is survived by his wife (a daughter of Mr C. Hood-Williams), and two daughters, Miss Joan Edgar, art mistress at Woodford House, Havelock North, and Miss Marian Edgar, W.R.N.S., Lyttelton.” [Press, Volume LXXXI, Issue 24630, 28 July 1945, Page 8]
