Biographical Notes:

"A seaman lost his life recently during minesweeping operations in the Hauraki Gulf. He was Leading-Seaman Raymond A. Downes, of Dunedin. Leading-Seaman Downes was carried overboard when a trawl was being operated from the minesweeper Kiwi, and all efforts at rescue failed. Following the usual practice, a naval court of inquiry is investigating the circumstances of the accident."
