Biographical Notes:

"WIFE SEES HUSBAND AFTER FIVE YEARS PRISONER ON FORMOSA (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 28. Mrs Irene Armstrong, whose home is in Carlton, South-east London, saw her husband, Lieutenant S. F. Armstrong, Royal Artillery, for the first time in five years at 5 o'clock this afternoon. She arrived in Wellington by the Rangitata this morning and was flown in an R.N.Z.A.F. Dakota from Paraparaumu to Wigram, from where she was conveyed by motor to the sanatorium. Lieutenant Armstrong was captured at Singapore by the Japanese and was a prisoner on Formosa until he was brought to New Zealand in the Maunganui after V-J Day. Because he was too ill to be repatriated to England the War Office arranged Mrs Armstrong's trip. Mrs Armstrong said to-night that her husband was looking exceedingly well, and was on the road to recovery. She had no indication when he was likely to be discharged from hospital, but she would remain in New Zealand until then. At the moment, she had no other plans. While in Christchurch, Mrs Armstrong will stay with Mr and Mrs W. Keenlyside, of St. Andrew's Hill. Mr Keenlyside is a member of the staff of Lever Bros., of whose staff in England Armstrong was a member before the war. Mrs Armstrong said that both Mr and Mrs Keenlyside had been extremely good to her husband since he arrived in Christchurch." [Evening Star, Issue 25804, 29 May 1946, Page 7]
