“A cable message received to-day by the Prime Minister conveys news of the death in the Dardanelles of Lieut. Oscar Freyberg, eldest son of the late Mr. James Freyberg, of Wellington, and brother to Lieut.-Commander Bernard Freyberg, who was last week included in the Distinguished Service Order. Deceased, who was 34 years of age, and unmarried, was born at Kensington, London, and arrived in Wellington with his parents in 1891. He was for some time a law clerk here, but was engaged in journalism before he left for London on 30th October to enlist. Previous information was that Lieutenant Freyberg had been in charge of a section of trawlers engaged in minesweeping operations in the North Sea, when he had the experience of being blown up no less than three times in the boats under him. He was promoted, and went to the Dardanelles, whence comes news of his death. Lieutenant Freyberg was a prominent yachtsman, and recently vice-commodore of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club.
