Biographical Notes:

“News was received here last evening of the death in France of Sergt. Stanley Barnard, of the Australian Expeditionary Force. Sergt. Barnard, who died from wounds sustained during the big offensive on the Somme, was a young New Zealander, and at the outbreak of the war was a student at Victoria University College. He was amongst the first to volunteer for service with the New Zealand Forces at Samoa, and on his return went to Australia, where he enlisted with the Australian Forces. He went through the hardships of the Gallipoli campaign, where he was severely wounded in several places, with shrapnel, but made a remarkably good recovery, and though recommended for a trip home with other convalescents, considered it his duty to go with the Anzacs to France, and to use his own words, "see the thing through." He was there again severely wounded and succumbed to his injuries on July 26. He had taken up school teaching as a profession, but was an enthusiast in military matters and a very fine soldier and man. His mother, Mrs. Walker, resides at Ormondville.” [Dominion, Volume 9, Issue 2846, 10 August 1916, Page 5]

Lieutenant Stanley Barnard did serve in Samoa from 15 August 1914 to 8 February 1915. He was convicted of stealing after standing trial in a Field General Court Martial held on 6 February 1915 at Apia, Samoa and sentenced to be cashiered. He was dismissed from the New Zealand Army effective from 8 February 1915.
