Biographical Notes:

“Mr James Yeomans Dixon, who lost his life in the Rangitane, was well-known in sports circles in Wellington. Aged 27, he was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs G. F. Dixon, of Kelburn. His father is a veteran member of the Ministerial Secretarial Corps at Parliament House. Mr Dixon was educated at Kelburn School, and at Wellington College, and afterwards studied at Victoria College. He was one of the founders of the Victoria University College Harriers’ Club and took a keen an[d] active interest in sports. He was a member of the staff of the National Mutual Life Association for seven years, and after a period in Dunedin as a radio announcer, he left New Zealand in March, 1939, to work his passage home in a freighter. After his arrival in England Mr Dixon worked with the Ministry of Labour Juvenile transference scheme for building new careers for children from distressed areas. When the war broke out the scheme was curtailed and Mr Dixon was engaged in looking after parties of children at health camps. He was subsequently offered a trip to Australia helping with a party of 500 little Britons, From Sydney he came to New Zealand to see his people. At the time of his death he was on his way back to England together with the other escorts who came out with the children to undertake whatever war work might await him.” [Timaru Herald, Volume CXLIX, Issue 21852, 3 January 1941, Page 4]
