George Ginders left New Zealand in July 1917  for Sling Camp in the UK, where he spent a month before embarking for France and Etaples Camp. He became ill shortly after leaving Etaples and was admitted to hospital, eventiually being evacuated through Abbeville to the NZ hospital at  Brockenhurst, where he died from meningitis.

A new plaque was fitted to Ginder's grave in 2019. The old "kerbstone" around the family plot had fallen off in the 1980's and the church had refused access to the CWGC to repair the grave. On our instigation, the CWGC revisited the church and replaced his inscription. His brother. Joseph. was killed at Gallipoli ( Chanuk Bair NZ Memorial) and is also inscribed on the family grave.
