Biographical Notes:

“Roy George D'Arcy Irvine, who died in the Nelson hospital on Saturday, saw considerable service during the war. He joined the Main Body in company with two brothers, and was in action with the 12th Regiment in the Canal fight. While in Egypt he suffered severely from dysentery. He was on Gallipoli, afterwards proceeding to France, where he was wounded several times. On the last occasion he was buried by a shell, and when dug out was thought to be dead. As a result, he suffered severely from shell-shock, and never fully recovered. At the inquest the evidence of deceased’s brother was to the effect that early on the morning of May 28rd he found deceased lying across his bunk in the whare they were occupying at Glenroy, with his throat bleeding and a razor in his hand. Deceased's demeanour had been unusual some time prior to the occurrence, and since his return from active service he had been a changed man, his nerves being affected. Dr. Parr, resident surgeon at the hospital, stated that Irvine was admitted to the institution with a deep wound in his throat, from the consequences of which he died. He gathered from deceased's attitude that he had a very fixed determination to take his own life. Had he recovered, witness said be would not have felt justified in discharging him from the Public Hospital, but would have sent him to the Mental Hospital. There was no doubt deceased was of unsound mind when he committed the deed.” [Press, Volume LVII, Issue 17167, 9 June 1921, Page 9]
