Biographical Notes:

Joseph had suffered chronic gastritis since serving at Gallipoli and had been hospitalised several times. Evacuated to the UK and the NZ General Hospital at Walton-on Thames, he was eventually discharged in July 1917, as "permanently unfit for military service" - the reasons given were gastritis and senility ( He was 53 at the time of his discharge, although it states 51 on the medical record). The medical record states that the condition was worsened by his service.

His service record ends at that point- his actual cause of his death is unknown and he does not appear in the official Roll of Honour, published in 1924.
