Biographical Notes:

Corporal John Thomson's father was the Hon. George Malcolm Thomson, one time Member of Parliament for Dunedin North, losing his seat in 1914, and then a Member of the Legislative Council from 1918 to 1932. His father was better known for his scientific contributions and was a prolific writer. His major publication was "The naturalisation of plants and animals in New Zealand" (1922), that described over 1,200 introduced species. Corporal Thomson's mother was Emma Thomson (née Allan) who died of tuberculosis on 21 July, 1894. His parents first met at the Girls' Provincial School (later Otago Girls' High School), where George was teaching part-time and Emma was a student.
