Biographical Notes:

"A Royal Air Force instructor attached to the Royal New Zealand Air Force station at Ohakea was drowned on Saturday afternoon while swimming at Tangimoana Beach, on the coast near Palmerston North.

The victim was Flying-Officer John Rowley Miller Stewart, 24, son of Mr J. R. M. Stewart, of Eltham. Flying-Officer Stewart was swimming with two other officers about 150 yards from the shore. When they saw that he was in difficulties they went to his assistance, but the undertow was so strong that they were forced to let him go and reached the shore with difficulty."

Northern Advocate, 30 December 1940, Page 3

John had joined the RAF in 1937, and was on loan to the RNZAF as an instructor.
