Biographical Notes:

“PRIVATE J. W. MELVIN. Private John Warden Melvin, son of Mr and Mrs J. Melvin, of Tokanui, was killed in action on August 23. He enlisted in the 28th reinforcements on his 20th birthday. Private Melvin was born at Mabel Bush, his education being received at Kennington and at Tokanui. He was, before enlisting, engaged in sawmill work with his father. The deceased soldier was a keen and successful competitor at athletic sports, his forte being swimming.“ [Southland Times, Issue 17889, 19 September 1918, Page 2]
