Biographical Notes:

“A verdict was returned that, Charles William Mead, aged 69, died at Christchurch on February 21 from  heart failure associated with disease of the coronary arteries. At the time of his death Mead was undergoing a course of training at a military camp. Staff-Sergeant John  Wilson said that from February 4 until the time of his death Mead was under his command in camp. The work he was doing was not of a strenuous nature. The Coroner: Does not the age question enter into the training of these men? Witness: All the men are selected by Army Headquarters. The Coroner: Does the medical aspect not enter into it? Witness: I do not. think so.”
