Biographical Notes:

“LANCE-CPL. L. H. McHARG. Lance-Corporal Leslie Herbert McHarg, killed in action on August 25, was the eldest son of Mr J. T. McHarg, of Woolston. He left New Zealand with the 25th Reinforcement attached to the Specialists' Company, and had been serving in France for ten months at the time of his death. The late Lance-Corporal McHarg was educated at the Opawa School, and later at the West Christchurch District High School, where he passed his Junior Civil Service examination. He entered the Lands and Deeds Department in Christchurch as a cadet, remaining there until his enlistment at the age of 20 years. Continuing his studies he passed his matriculation examination, and, with a view to entering the Law Drafting Department, he commenced a five years' course of study at Canterbury College for the B.A. and LL.B. degrees. Before leaving New Zealand he was advised that he had passed the first section of the LL.B. degree. His death in France cut short what promised to be a bright career. In civil life he went in for cycling, swimming, tennis, shooting and photography.” [Sun (Christchurch), Volume V, Issue 1437, 20 September 1918, Page 3]
