Norman (Plunkey) was injured in the battle of Greece around the area of Larissa by (it is thought) Stuka dive bombers. He sustained injuries to his legs and although initially joked with ambulance st...aff, died of blood loss/shock on the way. He was acting in the role of a motorcycle dispatch rider for his unit. The 7th Anti tank Regiment was involved in covering the withdrawal of the NZ Division from the Olympus and Servia Passes in Greece on the 18th April 1942. After heavy fighting, they withdrew to Elass...on, where they came under attack from Stuka dive bombers. While the first Stuka was shot down, the commander of the 34th Anti-Tank Battery, Major Jenkins and 2nd Lt E.G 'Toby' Lewis were wounded but stayed in action. Gunners R.A Fromenton and J.McMillan were killed in action, Norman Mackay died on the journey to hospital, gallantly joking to the last about his terrible wounds. "From 2nd New Zealand Divisional Artillery Official History - 'N' Troop, 34 Anti-Tank Battery with their 2 Pounder Portee's had been covering the retreat from Dheskati, with B S...quadron, Cavalry Division, and had arrived in Elasson, joining the retreating Divisional Cavalry A and C Squadrons (mechanised), including O & P Troops of 34 Anti-Tank Battery who had covered the Olympus and Servia passes road retreat. There, as they passed through Elasson, and on their way across the plain to the left flank of 6 Brigade, the retreating columns came under Stuka attack. The first Stuka to come down at them with siren blaring met fire from the Lewis guns of Divisional Cavalry and the Bren guns of the ant-tankers, and it failed to come out of its dive. In the ensuing attack, the CO of 34 Anti-Tank Battery, Major Jenkins, and 2nd Lt. Toby Lewis of N Troop were wounded. Gunners Fromenton and McMillan were killed, and Gunner Norman (Plunkey) Mackay died of wounds in an ambulance on the way to hospital." Read More
