“Advice has been received in Invercargill that Private Thomas Lindsay Baxter, was killed in action on August 24. The deceased was 27 years of age, and the eldest son of Mr J. S. Barter, of Invercargill, who is prominent in business circles. Private Baxter went to Melbourne come 10 years ago, and was employed by ‘Messers Moran and Cato, the well-known provision merchants, Mr Cato being his uncle. Deceased, who enlisted with the 6th Australian Reinforcements, was in Gallipoli from August, 1915, till the evacuation, and went to France with the first Australian troops.” [Evening Star, Issue 16230, 27 September 1916, Page 4]
