Biographical Notes:

A large party of police and experienced bushmen set out from Waiouru to-day to search for a missing deerstalker, Walter Thomas Hoare aged about 23, of Lower Hutt. He had been missing in the rugged bush-clad Kaimanawa Ranges since Sunday, when he set out on a deer-hunting expedition. Hoare was a member of a party which camped in the ranges about five miles off the Desert road and about 20 miles from Waiouru. Having had experience in deer-stalking, he set out alone towards the heavy bush country, and had with him a supply of chocolate and raisins, a rifle and 30 rounds of ammunition. When he failed to return, the police at Taihape were notified, and Constable R. Gardiner, of Ohakune, organised a search party.
