Biographical Notes:

"A lorry driven by Leslie William Ballantyne was struck at the Waimatulku level crossing this morning by a locomotive which was proceeding from Oporo to Thorbury. Mr Ballantyne was killed. The lorry was wrecked, and portions of the vehicle were carried along the line for several chains. Mr Ballantyne, who was aged 40 and single, returned recently from four years service overseas."
