"Lieutenant C. Hally, reported killed in action, was the third son of Mr and Mrs James Hally, of Valmai, Cambridge. He was 29 years of age, a solicitor by profession, and just prior to going on active service had joined his father's firm, practising in Cambridge and Morrinsville. He won the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry in leading and encouraging his men under heavy fire. He was the first man in his district to gain a military award on active service. Lieutenant Hally was educated at Cambridge and Auckland, where he qualified for a solicitor. His elder brother was also killed in action some time ago, and a younger brother has been invalided home, wounded and broken in health.
