Biographical Notes:

While dropping leaflets to publicise “Air Week Liberty Loans” at Whangarei, Murray Gray, the pilot and Charles Smith, on board to drop the leaflets, performed a slow roll over the city centre. While inverted, the engine cut out and they attempted to land the plane in a sparsely populated street. As they came in, the undercarriage hit overhead power and telephone lines and the aircraft crashed into the corner of a brick building.
