The fleet leaves for Gallipoli

The assembled force in the fleet at Mudros consisted of over 75,000 personnel in 84 ships:-

29th Division 17,649 personnel in 15 ships
ANZAC Division 30,638 personnel in 35 ships
French Division 16,762 personnel in 22 ships
Royal Naval Division 10,007 personnel in 12 ships

Late on the 24 April 1915 the fleet left port headed to arrive of  the various landings under the cover of darkness. The main thrust of the invasion was the landing of the British and French forces on the beaches of Cape Helles. The ANZAC Division was to be landed at 'Z' beach further along the peninsular with the task of securing parts of the Sari Ridge overlooking the beach to permit the main ANZAC force to land and then secure the high ground in the middle of the peninsular. The landings were to take place at dawn.
