Biographical Notes:

“The inquest on Trooper Anderson, who died through falling into a hot pool at Ohinemutu, was continued to-day, before Mr. R. W. Dyer, coroner.

Sergeant Bayliss, of the Medical Corps, deposed that deceased said : " Nobody is to blame; it's, my own fault; I should not have been there. I stepped on the edge and slipped."

(Jura*) Mokai and Taiwai and the Rev. F. A, Bennett deposed to seeing deceased about 9 p.m. near the pool, apparently under the influence of liquor. Mokai heard "yells" about 11, and found that deceased had just scrambled out of the hot pool.

The coroner said there might be some comment on the danger of the pool in question and the necessity for fencing in the interest of public safety, but he, with Sergeant Cummings and the resident officer, had visited the pool and found it was on private property. Hence, it would be recognised, the public authorities had no right to fence. He considered the place quite safe in daytime to anyone in his normal senses, but not to anyone wandering about at night without a guide. The verdict was that William Dickson Anderson died from shock, occasioned by accidentally falling into a boiling pool at Ohinemutu.”
