Biographical Notes:

“ After failing health for some time, the death of  Sgt. William Clarence Waters, a well-known and highly-respected resident of Tauranga, occurred recently. He was 50 years of age.

Born at Inglewood, Sgt. Waters spent his early days in Taranaki and was educated here, later working tor the Public Works Department. He served with the First New Zealand Expeditionary Force and was gassed.

Returning to the Dominion, Sgt. Waters completed his training and was for about 15 years surveying in the Taranaki district. About 14 years ago, he came to Tauranga where he was engaged in a grocery business on his own account. Shortly before the second world war, he was engaged in surveying operations and after a period in camp was posted to the Army Headquarters in Tauranga.

Sgt. Waters married Miss Lilian Dill, of Stratford, about 20 years ago. He was a keen rifleman and was a crack shot when at school. His sporting interests included football and he was a keen player in his earlier days.

He is survived by his wife. His parents were Mr and Mrs W. Waters, of Selwyn Street and he had three sisters, Mesdames F. Walker, of Auckland, J. Smith, of Kopu and Mis L. Cheat of Taupo, and a brother Mr A. Waters, of Mangawai.

Sgt. Waters was accorded a military funeral at Tauranga. The firing, party comprised members of the Tauranga College Cadets, and the Tauranga Highland Pipe Band, of which Sgt. Waters had been a member, was in attendance.”
