NZ WAR GRAVES

Biographical Notes:

Sarah Davidson died of injuries after her car and a train collided; coincidentally, Sarah’s brother, Gavin (Guy), also died in a collision between a train and a motor vehicle.

“What is believed to be the worst railway level crossing accident in the history of New Zealand occurred at 6.35 on Saturday evening, when the Opua bound express carrying passengers who had been visiting the Whangarei races, struck one of the buses owned by the Northern Motor Bus Company, which was coming from Hikurangi with a load of young people going to the pictures in Whangarei. A tremendous impact occurred on McLeod’s Crossing. As a result the bus was completely smashed and hurled some distance, and of the eleven occupants four were killed outright, one died before arrival at Whangarei Public Hospital and another, whose case was hopeless from the outset, succumbed on Sunday morning. Another, Phillip Sparks, has an extensive fracture of the skull, and the outlook for his recovery is not good.
