Biographical Notes:

“Private Robert Chirnside, who was killed in action in France on August 29, was born at Balclutha 36 years ago, and was educated there. He was the second son of Mr John Chirnside, now of Dunedin. Private Chirnside served through the Boer war, and left New Zealand for the front with the Twenty-third Reinforcements. He resided at Stewart Island, and leaves a wife and two children.“ [Otago Witness, Issue 3367, 25 September 1918, Page 42]
