Biographical Notes:

"Cyclist Falls Under Truck: Robert Chambers Bellam, aged 49, died from head injuries received when he fell under an Ozone Dairy truck between Burnham and Rolleston on February 16. Eric James Hammond, driver of the truck, said he was returning from Burnham with a passenger, William Stevens. On witness’s suggestion Stevens called out, "How far are you going,” when the truck passed a cyclist on the road. Witness saw the cyclist go out of his view on the left and then heard Stevens say “He’s off.” He felt a bump and stopped. Apparently the cyclist had fallen under the truck. Witness could not say definitely what had happened. The cyclist would be about three feet from the edge of the bitumen, and the side of the truck eight feet from it, leaving about four feet between the truck and the cycle. Stevens said the car slowed down to about 10 miles an hour when he spoke to Bellam and Bellam put his hand out to catch hold of the truck. Stevens did not see exactly what happened either, but he thought Bellam might have overbalanced when his hand caught a chain on the side of the truck. Lieutenant K. R. Lothian, an Army medical officer, said that the head injuries received by Bellam would be consistent with the wheels of a car having gone right over his head. The verdict was that Bellam died of the injuries received in the accident, and that there was no direct evidence as to how Bellam came to fall under the truck."  [Press, Volume LXXVIII, Issue 23597, 26 March 1942, Page 2]
