Biographical Notes:

Pte Paki Conrad who was born on 26 September 1892 at Awanui. His surname was originally spelt Kanara. He was a self employed Gum Digger living in Awanui and single. He attested into the Maori Reinforcements at Narrow Neck Camp but on 17 July 1916. He left NZ on 14 October 1916 and arrived in the UK at Devonport on 29 December. He had a number of hospital admissions in the UK before leaving for France on 23 September 1917 arriving at Etaples on 26 September. He went to hospital sick on 24 March 1918 and passed through several establishments before being admitted to Walton on Thames hospital on 8 August suffering from lymphe sarcoma, chest. His diagnosis was changed to fibrous sarcoma, chest , on 22 August and TB on 9 September. He too was due to be evacuated to NZ but died on 6 December 1918 of syphilis, phthisis and pulmonalis. He was buried on 10 December at Brookwood Military Cemetery at the same time as William Raroa and alongside him.
