"Trooper Owen Ferris (killed in action) was the second son of Mr and Mrs Richard Ferris, of Akaroa, and a grandson of the late Mr and Airs Le Lievre, two of Akaroa's earliest settlers. Trooper Ferris was born on the Peninsula, and educated at the Akaroa District High School. After leaving school he took up farming on his father's farm. When the military doctors rejected his elder brother, he enlisted himself at once, though he was barely 19 years old at the time. He left New Zealand with the 6th Reinforcements, and put in five weeks' strenuous trench work in Gallipoli. After the evacuation, he was with the Mounted Brigade in Egypt, and it was during the recent heavy fighting against the Turks, east of the Canal, that he met a soldier's death on the battlefield.
