“Second Lieutenant Oscar C. Smith (killed in action) was a son of Mr C. E. Smith, of Glenledi, and late of Stirling. He left New Zealand as a private with the Seventh Reinforcement, and after a few months spent in Egypt, crossed to France with the first New Zealand forces to arrive there. During his two and a half years’ service in France he saw a good deal of trench warfare, and had some memorable experiences during the Somme fighting, through the whole of which he passed unscathed. Being a school teacher by profession, he was latterly pressed to take a part in the educational work undertaken for after-the-war purposes for convalescing and home returning soldiers, but refused, considering that as he left his native land to assist in the fight for freedom it was his duty to be at the front. There he died for his country. He was educated at the Stirling and Lower Harbour Schools and subsequently at the Boys’ High School.“ [Otago Witness, Issue 3367, 25 September 1918, Page 42]
