Biographical Notes:

“Advice has been received by Mr T. D. Bathgate, of Pakiri, that his son, L./Cpl. Norman Shand Bathgate, has been killed as the result of an accident. L /Cpl. Bathgate was born at Goodwater, Canada, in 1914, and came to New Zealand in 1920. He received his primary education in Dunedin and Tuakau, and later took a four-year commercial course at Mt. Albert Grammar School, graduating from there with honours. He commenced his business career as a junior in the firm of Abraham & Williams at Taumarunui and in 1937 transferred to the firm of Wright Stephenson, Dunedin, where owing to his executive ability he rapidly gained promotion. At the outbreak of the war he was manager of the firm's seed, fertiliser and machinery department. He joined up with the third Echelon and went overseas in August, 1940. He served in the 6th R.M.T. and went through the Greece, Crete, Libyan and Tunisian campaigns. Last July he was severely wounded by a bomb from a German plane. He was a keen and clever Rugby football player and played fullback for Matoma when this team won the Rodney championship in 1931. He also represented the King Country and was captain of that team in 1934-35. He represented Otago in 1937-38.” [Rodney and Otamatea Times, Waitemata and Kaipara Gazette, 14 July 1943, Page 3]

“Corporal Daniel Campbell, who was awarded the Military Medal for outstanding bravery in the attack on El Hamma on March 26 and has since died of wounds, was the elder son of Mr and Mrs John Campbell, of Reid road, South Dunedin. Corporal Campbell, who was 27 years of age at the time of his death, was a well-known footballer in Otago. He was educated at Gimmerburn, where he resided with his uncle, Mr John McLeod, and at the age of 19 he represented Maniototo County at Rugby football. He was at one time captain of the Lake County team and for two years was a member of the Union first fifteen, Dunedin. Of a quiet disposition, he was held in high respect in the Gimmerburn district, where he spent most of his life. He enlisted on the outbreak of war, and left for overseas service as a private in 1940.” [Otago Daily Times, Issue 25273, 9 July 1943, Page 2]
