Biographical Notes:

CAPTAIN L. V. HULBERT. Cable advice has been received that Captain Leslie Hulbert, a brother of Mrs S. C. Thompson, of Christchurch, has been killed in action in France. Captain Hulbert was well known in Christchurch, being the son of Mr C. P. Hulbert, at one time mayor of this city. Prior to enlisting he was in the service of Messrs Murray Roberts and Company, Wellington, as accountant. On the outbreak of war he was attached to the Garrison Artillery in Wellington, and after serving in the forts left New Zealand with the Ist Howitzer Battery to leave these shores, with the rank of lieutenant. He served in Egypt and Gallipoli, and at the time of his death was in charge of a heavy trench mortar division in France. The late Captain Hulbert was an ex-pupil of the Sumner and New Brighton Schools. He has three other brothers on active service, one brother, Major E. G. Hulbert, being at present stationed in Egypt.
