During a cross country exercise, flying a Gloucester Meteor,  he made a low pass over Warmwell, Dorset, UK, followed by a climbing roll into cloud at 2000ft from which he emerged in a vertical dive to the ground. He was New Zealand's first WW2 casualty in a jet powered aircraft. Previously bought down over the Netherlands, he had spent 5 years as a POW.
