Biographical Notes:

James was a labourer from Richmond, Christchurch, when he enlisted on the 20th August 1914.

He sailed with the main body in October 1914 with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles.

He landed in Gallipoli and was wounded in thigh on 6th July 1915. He convalesced in Malta and he was promoted to Corporal in December 1915.

He then served in the Sinai Campaign with the NZ Mounted Rifles Brigade. He was hospitalised in May 1916 with Enteritis and again in hospital in August 1916. He was promoted to Sergeant in October 1916 and transferred to the 16th Company 3rd Battalion of the Imperial Camel Corps.

The Imperial Camel Corps, which included two New Zealand companies, played a vital role in the Sinai and Palestine campaigns. Between 400 and 450 New Zealanders fought in the Camel Corps, and 41 of them died before the two New Zealand companies were disbanded in mid-1918.

He was shot in the right shoulder 28th November 1917 defending the Jerusalem Nablus Road on a hill called Bald Hill and died from the wound on the 27th December 1917.
