"The inquest concerning the death of Henry Clancy, a returned soldier, who died as a result of injuries sustained in a fall in the Central Coffee Palace on Sunday, was concluded before the coroner, Mr. W, G. Kiddell, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Sergeant Cruickshank appeared on behalf of the police. Evidence was given by William Hannifin, licensee of the Thistle Inn Hotel, that the deceased was a barman at his hotel till July 10. Deceased was about 30 years of age, and suffered from shellshock, but witness did not know that the deceased was subject to sudden fits of giddiness. Sergeant Cruickshank said that the police had not been able to ascertain the whereabouts of the deceased's relatives.

The coroner said that it was probable that deceased had been seized with a sudden fit of giddiness as he was ascending the stairs. There was, however, no evidence beyond the fact that deceased suffered from shell-shock that he suffered from turns of giddiness. The verdict would be that deceased met his death through a fracture of the spine, caused by accidentally falling down the staircase at the Central Coffee Palace."
