Biographical Notes:

"The Very Rev. P. B. Haggitt, Dean of Nelson, has received word that his son, Graham D’Arcy, was killed in action on the Island of Singapore on February 13, 1942. Lieutenant Haggitt was born in Christchurch and educated at Christ’s College. On leaving college he entered the firm of Dalgety and Co., and later he received an appointment as assistant manager on a Dunlop rubber plantation in Johore, Malaya. There he joined the Johore Volunteers. Shortly before Singapore was attacked he received a commission in the Malay Regiment. He was aged 28 years when he was killed." [Otago Daily Times, Issue 25976, 17 October 1945, Page 6]

"The Very Rev. Dean Haggitt has received word that his son, Graham D’Arcy, was killed in action on the Island of Singapore, on 13th February, 1942. In his letter Lieut. Colonel J. R. G. Andre, who had just been released from captivity, wrote: “Your son joined my battalion, the 1st Bat., Malay Regiment, a few weeks before the fall of Singapore, and was serving with A Company on the afternoon of 13th February when the Japanese put down a heavy concentration of artillery fire. The company suffered heavy casualties and three out of the four British officers, including your son, were killed. During the fighting your son showed great courage and gallantry and I am proud to have had him under my command. It was the bravery of such officers as your son that earned the battalion a good name for its conduct during the fighting immediately preceding the fall of Singapore.” Lieutenant Haggitt was born in Christchurch and educated at Christ’s College, where he won the sports championship cup. On leaving College he entered the firm of Dalgety and Company and worked in Christchurch, Ashburton, Blenheim, Kaikoura and Nelson. He then received an appointment as assistant manager on a Dunlop rubber plantation in Johore, Malaya. There he joined the Johore Volunteers. Shortly before Singapore was attacked he received a commission in the Malay Regiment. He was 28 years old when he was killed." [Nelson Evening Mail, Volume 80, 15 October 1945, Page 4]
