Biographical Notes:

"The death has occurred at Greymouth, after an illness of seven weeks, of Corporal George Kitchener Merriman, the first soldier of the present war to die in Greymouth. Corporal Merriman, who was born in Christchurch, was 42 years of age and had only recently returned from 12 months service overseas with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He had lived at Greymouth for 18 years and had been attached to the staff of Revington’s Hotel. He represented West Coast at cricket and took a keen interest in all sports, being a member of the Greymouth Boxing and Wrestling Association, the United Cricket Club, the Greymouth Jockey Club, and the Greymouth Trotting Club. He is survived by his father, two brothers — Messrs Reginald Merriman (Christchurch) and B. Merriman (overseas) and two sisters-—Miss Dorothy Merriman (Wellington) and Miss Gwendoline Merriman (Christchurch)."
