Biographical Notes:

Major George Hunter Macan, of the New Zealand Regular Forces, who was shortly to retire, died at Hamner Springs on Monday. At the time of his death he held the position of assistant director of transport in the Southern Military District. Aged 54, Major Macan served in the First and Second World Wars. On returning from service abroad in 1919, he joined, the Regular Forces, and in 1934 he was commissioned in the New Zealand Staff Corps as a lieutenant, and was appointed officer in charge of supply and transport and adjutant of the 3rd Composite Company of the Army Service Corps. When the recent war broke out he was promoted to captain, and in 1940 he was appointed district supply officer at Christchurch. His majority was gazetted in May, 1941. From .1941 to 1943 he was officer commanding Addington military camp. In 1943 Major Macan was appointed supply officer of the expeditionary force to Norfolk Island. He returned to Christchurch in April, 1945, as assistant director of supply and transport- and commander of the. A.S.C in the Southern Military District. Major Macan is survived by Mrs Macan and one daughter. A brother is Mr C. G. Macan, a member of the literary staff of the ‘ Otago Daily Times.’
