Biographical Notes:

According to UK records, he enlisted at 18 with the Wiltshire Regiment in 1904. A record, made by his wife, Sarah Hannah SPURR, who he married in New Zealand in March 1914, after his death, states that he had been a resident of New Zealand for 5 years before  serving 4 months and 12 days in England, from August 10th 1914 to December 18th 1914. His final discharge from the Wiltshire's was February 1915. There is a note on his record that his correct name is Frederick William Middleton. This also appears on his UK pension and index cards in UK Archives, as no marriage is on record for his father, William Simpson to his mother Leah Middleton. There is no record remaining of his joining the Home Service Section, other than his headstone. ( thanks to Christine Clement)
