Biographical Notes:

"The funeral of Sergeant-Major Frederick Arthur Lathan, Warrant Officer, Class 1, New Zealand Temporary Staff, who died suddenly at Waiouru Military Camp on Wednesday while carrying out his duties as Camp Sergeant Major, took place at Wellington yesterday with full military honours. After a short service at the Kent Terrace mortuary chapel at 3

o'clock the cortege left for the Karori Cemetery, where it was met by a firing party. The pall-bearers were six warrant officers from Waiouru and Trentham Camps. The late Sergeant-Major Lathan, who was held in high regard by his fellow soldiers, was a veteran of the 1914-18 War, during which he was awarded the Military Medal and was mentioned in dispatches. In the present war he had earned high commendation for his work as a warrant officer and had been recommended for a commission. He leaves a widow. In civil life he was an employee of the Wellington Harbour Board, which was represented at the funeral.
