Biographical Notes:

The High Commissioner states that he recently learnt that Captain Ernest Tristem Rupert CARLYON, of the 10th Sherwood Foresters, is a prisoner of war in Germany, at Crefeld. "Captain Carlyon has lost an eye, and he suffered severely from exposure after being wounded. Before capture he lay in the trench for 36 hours, with snow falling all night, and he contracted a severe attack of inflammation of the lungs in consequence. His mother lives at Napier, and I am making inquiries on her behalf as to the reason of the non-delivery of her letters to him." [Otago Witness, Issue 3269, 8 November 1916]

"After a severe operation, Captain E. T. R. Carlyon, of Gwavas Station, Tikokino, died in England on Sunday, according to cabled advice received in Napier. He was victim of a relapse 12 days after the operation. Born in Napier in 1892, and educated at Heretaunga School and Wanganui Collegiate School, Captain Carlyon later went to Pembroke College, Cambridge University, where he took his degree. He enlisted in the Army from there at the outbreak of the last war, receiving a commission in the 10th Sherwood Foresters, and in 1915 went to France. Returning to New Zealand in 1919, he took up the management of his father's Gwavas estate in Hawke's Bay. He married a daughter of Mr. H. R. Waldegrave, Palmerston North, in 1923, and after his mother’s death in 1936 he lived at "Tregnehan" in Cornwall, England. At the start of the present war he again enlisted in the Army, and was appointed an officer in the 10th Devons. Captain Carlyon is survived by his wife, four daughters and one son, and his sister, Mrs. O. Hudson, of Gwavas." [Manawatu Times, Volume 66, Issue 177, 28 July 1941, Page 4]
