Biographical Notes:

A Harvard II (NZ961) piloted by Leading Aircraftsman Donald McKenzie with LAC Jack Villiers took off on a training flight from Woodburne to Lake Grassmere at 7am on 21 January 1942. About an hour later a witness at Cape Campbell heard an engine roar and an explosion in the direction of the sea. Both occupants were killed when the plane, presumably, crashed in Cook Strait. Neither body was recovered.
